"Looking Forward – Student Centric and Sustainable’. 

The 25th ANZSSA Conference was held online 29-30 November 2021.  With over 60 presentations including three panel sessions and two informative keynotes and a record number of delegates, we thank our delegates and sponsors for helping us make this conference a huge success.

For 50 years ANZSSA has been supporting student service professionals and during that time the student cohort has grown and diversified. Over that period, we have changed the way we think about and deliver student services to meet student needs, but never have we been compelled to change at the accelerated pace of the last 18 months.  The global pandemic has impacted significantly on our world, politically, economically and socially.  It has impacted on us as people and as professionals.  It has fundamentally impacted on our sector and forced us to rethink our market, our offerings, our mode of delivery and how we best reach and support our students. 

In 2020 our focus was on the crisis and pivoting quickly to respond to the needs of our students to ensure they remained enrolled, engaged and successful.  Now in 2021 we are developing roadmaps to recovery, taking the learnings from the past year and reshaping the ways we deliver our services to students in the new environment, to ensure we continue to deliver the service our students need in a manner that will be sustainable into the future.  In this context, the theme of the 2021 ANZSSA Conference was ‘Looking Forward – Student Centric and Sustainable’.

Prof. Jan Thomas and Prof. Marcia Devlin
The health and wellbeing – and personal sustainability – of student services staff has never been more crucial than it is now, Prof. Devlin’s presentation on Personal Sustainability in Challenging Times: Ideas to Build Grit, Resilience and Optimism was informative and thought provoking.

Prof. Thomas delved into embracing student voices in our decision making in her keynote Students as Partners: How Massey University is Leaning into our Collective Future.  This session was well received by delegates, and created a lot of buzz on the online forum.
