Pre-Conference Experience
Noho marae at Ngā Hau e Whā marae and overland travel to Dunedin
Registrations have closed for this experience
Information for registered attendees
Join us for a uniquely Aotearoa (New Zealand) experience. Arrive in Ōtautahi Christchurch by 1:00pm on Saturday 7 December and join your hosts, colleagues from the University of Canterbury, who will share information and insights about the history of Christchurch and the impacts of some of its recent challenges, along with the opportunities this has provided for the Christchurch community.
On Saturday afternoon, you will travel together to Ngā Hau E Wha marae for a noho marae (overnight stay). You will be welcomed onto this urban marae and will experience an evening rich in the history and culture of the area. On Sunday 8 December, you will travel by bus down the east coast of the South Island with a stop for lunch at Moeraki Boulders, and time to explore this geographically interesting area. You will arrive in Dunedin with time to settle into your accommodation before the conference welcome function at 5:30pm on Sunday.
The noho marae at our 2016 conference in Auckland was a highlight for delegates who participated in this special cultural experience. We encourage you to join this year’s noho marae and tour.
** Please note minimum numbers of 15 delegates are required for this experience to proceed **

Additional Information
This experience will see all participants hosted in wharenui (meeting house) and this will be an open area, unisex sleeping arrangement in the tradition of noho marae where we sleep on the floor. You will be required to bring your own sleeping bag.
Pōwhiri process
Guests will be required to wear either long trousers or a skirt (for women). If you choose to wear a skirt, it must be below the knee.
Following the pōwhiri, all guests will be required to give a hongi and/or a kiss when greeting each other. A hongi is a gentle press of the noses.
Your hosts will explain the process as we go but please feel free to ask questions along the way.
